Although all animals are cute and lovely, opting for hedgehogs as pets is a good idea only if you can take good care of him. He might seem perfect because he doesn’t make any noise, but he has special needs that you might not know about.

Although hedgehogs are primarily insectivores, these wild animals can also eat different small animals and plants, and since they are nocturnal animals, they become active at night. However, if you decide to adopt such an animal, you must be careful not to scare it, because it uses its sharp quills as a defense .

There are many people who think at hedgehogs as pets, so they should know that they can choose from a large variety when they decide to buy one. The most common type is the African pygmy hedgehog which is a solitary animal and it must live alone. Although this type of hedgehog can live up to six years in the wild, it can reach ten years as a pet, and it can grow to be around ten inches long.

Hedgehogs as pets are not suitable for families with small kids. Children can exaggerate with their affection which can cause the animal to get scared and extend his quills. It can curl up into a ball with its quills drawn-out which could lead to the injury of a child. So, these animals are more appropriate for those who don’t have any children and who are home in the evenings and at night, since they are nocturnal animals.

In order to offer your pet all the conditions he needs, you must buy him a big cage because he is very active and he needs lots of space. So, a four feet long and two feet wide cage is the minimum size you should opt for. If your home doesn’t allow you to waste such a space, you should think about choosing a multi-level cage.

Hedgehog food must be high in protein and it must contain meat or chicken. Your pet will also need moist food, so you can supply it with canned dog or cat food. The hedgehog also eats fruits and vegetables such as beans, corn, carrots, peas, apples and grapes. If you want to add a little variety to its meals, you can opt for insects like crickets and mealworms, or if you don’t feel comfortable with that, you can feed him eggs.
