Decathlon Sports Competition

The decathlon sports competition is a field and track competition consisting of 10 events. It represents the supreme challenge for senior male and female athletes, as well. Athletes participating in the decathlon competition are named decathletes, and are viewed as superior multitalented athletes. This discipline and the decathletes are rather unknown, as a consequence of the fact that the competition is extremely demanding and not many athletes have the courage or the abilities to participate.

Furthermore, the decathlon sports competition is considered the ultimate challenge for an athlete, being the absolute test of mind and body; it challenges one’s character, determination, attitude and their physical abilities, as well. The competition is against your own self and the scoring tables. The target of the competition is to score more points than the other participants. No decathlete has ever reached the perfect score, although some of them got close results, therefore, there is permanently room for progress and improvement.

Usually, the most participants at the decathlon sports events are men. These 10 events are divided into 2 days. The first day includes: a sprint of 328 feet (100 meters), a long jump, a shot put, a high jump and a sprint of 1,312 feet (400 meters). The second day includes: a set of hurdles 361 feet (110 meters), a discus throw, a pole vault, a javelin throw, and a run of 4,921 feet (1,500 meters). Women participate mostly in a heptathlon, which is a similar competition of 7 events. However, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) approved scoring tables for a women’s decathlon in 2001. Thus, the 10 events for women are divided into 2 days. The first day includes: a sprint of 328 feet (100 meters), a discus throw, a pole vault, a javelin throw, and a sprint of 1,312 feet (400 meters). The second day includes: a set of hurdles of 328 feet (100 meters), long jump, shot put, high jump, and a run of 4,921 feet (1,500 meters).

When athletes train for a decathlon, they must cover all the mentioned fields of the competition that make use of physical skills and judgment capabilities. Moreover, the decathlon sports competition does not only test the decathletes’ overall skills, it also tests the decathletes’ endurance by grouping the aforementioned events in just 2 days, following the classic Olympic format. In fact, the decathlon competition has its roots in the pentathlon, which is an Ancient Greek competition consisting of 5 events that included: a discus throw, a javelin throw, a sprint, a wrestling match, and a long jump. The modern decathlon was held for the first time at the Stockholm Olympic Games in 1912.
