How to Use and Care for a Humidifier

A humidifier is one of the things which can bring you the most comfort during dry winter months when most people usually suffer from dry caught, chapped lips or dry skin. Even a small portable humidifier can make a huge difference in your home. However, in order for it to be as efficient as possible, it needs to be properly cared for.

How to use a humidifier
A humidifier is a device which adjusts the level of humidity in a room. It is ideal for people with sensitive skin as well as for people who have sinus problems. Some humidifiers even have a medication compartment which can be used for certain aerosol type medications. Using it is very easy. You simply fill the water compartment with water, plug it in and turn it on.

How to care for the filter
According to various humidifier manufacturers, the filter need to be changed every 1-3 months. The filter is usually the part of the humidifier which gathers dust and air bacteria. If it is not cleaned on a regular basis, it will eventually clog and will require the use of a new filter. Regular cleaning will prolong the life of a humidifier filter. Before cleaning the filter, it is always better to read the product’s description in order to see if it has any special requirements. However, if you no longer have the manufacturer’s instruction, you should still be able to clean it without any problems. Generally, a filter can easily be cleaned with warm water and soap. You can also add some vinegar to the mixture in order to eliminate any unpleasant odors. The mixture should contain half water and half vinegar. Just soak the filter in this mixture and allow it to sit for 20 minutes. This procedure is rather simple so it shouldn’t be a problem to repeat it once a week or once every two weeks. Keep in mind the fact that the filter is an optimal breeding ground for bacteria. Therefore if you want your humidifier to freshen the air in your home, you must clean the filter from time to time. You can buy the best rated humidifiers, and they will still need maintenance and care, so don’t expect to find some self-cleaning device that also cooks breakfast; it helps you, so you must help it have a longer functioning life.

How to clean the humidifier
The filter is not the only part of the humidifier which requires cleaning. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety advice people to clean new humidifiers before using them for the first time. Furthermore, portable humidifiers should be cleaned on a daily basis. The device should be unplugged, all leftover water should be emptied and the humidifier should be refilled with low mineral water. Furthermore, this device also requires a more extensive cleaning every week. However, the cleaning procedure is rather simple. Remove the tank after emptying it and take apart all removable parts. You can easily see which parts require cleaning as they are stained with a brownish mixture made of dust and bacteria. Use a mixture of vinegar and water and use it in order to rub the tank and the base. Some people also use a teaspoon of bleach but that isn’t really necessary. A regular cleaning with vinegar is usually enough in order to maintain the air in your home fresh and free of bacteria.
