The Science of Sleep

For more than fifty years scientists have tried to discover which the brain activity is. They have studied the physiological patterns of sleeping, and that is how the science of sleep can now reveal a great deal about the characteristics of sleep. If you want to learn more about sleep, how it can be influenced with the best sound machine, or with the best mattresses, or how it is possible for some people to control their dreams, keep on reading as we have some great insights on sleep.

The science of sleep teaches people that they don’t enter a passive state when they are asleep. On the contrary, sleep is considered to be a very active process during which the human mind processes the events that took place during the day. Depending on the worries and fears that each individual has, their dreams can become nightmares, because the subconscious that every person has amplifies all the information it receives from the brain during an entire day.

Although night sleep should come as natural as breathing, since our bodies need to replenish the energy used during the day, a lot of people experience problems falling asleep, either due to internal factors such as pain or stress, or due to external factors that often pass unnoticed. External factors are a lot easier to control. For example, a noisy neighbor or the snoring of your partner can easily be masked by the best sound machine. Such a device can emit a white noise or a kind of music that contains special frequencies meant to relax the brain.

Aside from noise, the list of environmental factors that affect sleep also includes light, sleeping surface (mattress), clutter and even colors. If your bedroom in painted in a bright color and it is constantly cluttered, you shouldn’t be surprised that you can’t easily fall asleep at night. As far as the mattress goes, it is important for them to be able to provide a good spinal support. The best mattresses are the ones made of memory foam or latex. These mattresses can contour the body’s natural curves, thus preventing back pains as well as tossing and turning.

Sleep also represents a way to restore the energy that our body needs to start a new day, especially if we have nice dreams that cause joy and cheerfulness to our subconscious. Although sleep is a period of reduced activity, there are some rare instances where people understand the fact that they are sleeping while they are asleep.

These persons claim that they can control their dreams by contemplating and appreciating that they are sleeping. Some of them can hardly wait to go back to sleep because, as they say, they feel like they have created their own small Universe where all their desires can come true.

The decreased responsiveness to external factors is one of the characteristics of sleep. However the reduced consciousness can still help people to be aware of the things that happen around them. Furthermore, they can even integrate these actions in their dreams. Depending on how people’s brains perceive the external stimuli, they can have nightmares or pleasant dreams.

The physiological changes that take place during sleep have to do with the fact that our temperature, levels of oxygen and blood pressure are reduced, and certain biological functions drop. The science of sleep has shown that breathing and heart rate are extremely constant when we are asleep. Things change when we are awake, because we have to deal with many factors that can influence the way our body reacts.

Speeches, exercising, emotions and other similar factors can affect the way our body behaves when we are awake. However, if we are sleeping and we dream that we are running in the park or from a group of bandits, we will notice similar changes in the way we breathe and in our heart rates.
